Aquatics
• A parent / guardian must be at least 18 years old, and be responsible for the child.
• Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by parent / guardian who must remain at the pool the entire time the child is present. If the child is left unattended it will be considered an abandonment issue and the proper authorities will be contacted.
Through SPLASH, Navy MWR Fitness strives to educate parents and legal guardians on pool safety and the dangers associated with unsupervised swimming. With structured swim lessons, swim skills assessment, safe play, and active supervison, the risk of accidental drowning can be significantly reduced. Click here for more on SPLASH.
Swim lessons are non-refundable after the start of lessons. Please sign up for one lesson per child per session.
Pool Guidelines
• A parent / guardian must be at least 18 years old, and be responsible for the child.

No Wristbands
• Children who cannot demonstrate the necessary skills to pass the Navy Youth Swim Test or choose not to participate in the test are classified as non-swimmers.
• Non-swimmers must stay in water not armpit deep (feet on the bottom of pool) or less and require active adult supervision.
• Non swimmers who do not meet the “armpit depth” guideline are encouraged to wear a US Coast Guard approved personal flotation device and require active adult supervision.
• Active supervision means the adult must in the water within arm’s reach of the child at all times.
Wristbands
• Children who have demonstrated the necessary skills to have FULL access to the Aquatics facility, including slides and diving boards, are classified as swimmers.
Course: Preschool Aquatics Level 1
Purpose: To orient preschool-age children to the aquatic environment and to help them acquire rudimentary levels of basic aquatic skills
Prerequisites
There are no skill prerequisites for Preschool Aquatics Level 1. Participants start at about 4 and 5 years old.
Learning Objectives
• Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side
• Blow bubbles through mouth and nose
• Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
• Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
• Front and back glides and recover to a vertical position
• Back float and recover to a vertical position
• Roll from front to back and back to front
• Tread with arm and hand actions
• Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back
• Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front and back
• Experience wearing a life jacket in the water
• Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency and knowing how to call for help
• Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards
Course: Preschool Aquatics Level 2
Purpose: To build on the basic aquatic skills learned in Level 1
Prerequisites
Successfully demonstrate the exit skills assessments from Preschool Aquatics Level 1
Learning Objectives
• Enter water by stepping in
• Exit water using ladder, steps or side
• Bobbing
• Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
• Front and back floats and glides
• Recover from a front or back float or glide to a vertical position
• Roll from front to back and back to front
• Tread water using arm and leg actions
• Combined arm and leg actions on front and back or back
• Finning arm action on back
• Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency and knowing how to call for help
• Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety

Classes meet Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday for four weeks. Each class is 30 minutes. Classes may be canceled or combined due to low enrollment.
Registration will be available online beginning at 9 a.m. on registration day. In person registration can be done during normal operating hours at Purdy Fitness Center Reception counter or at the Ikego MWR office.
Register at MyFFR. American Red Cross swim lessons are offered year-round for all abilities and ages:
• Parent / Child: 6 months - 3 years
• Preschool: 3 years - 5 years
• Levels 1 - 6: 6 years - 15 years
• Adults: 16 years and older
• $60 (classes are prorated for holidays)
• Free for active duty

Registration is available online beginning at 9 a.m. on registration day and in person during normal operating hours at Purdy Fitness Center reception counter and Ikego* MWR office. *Note: Swim Lessons held at Ikego Pool are available during the summer season only.

If the child's age is not in the levels approved ranges outlined above, they will not be able to register online and will need prior approval for registration.
